As far as travel abroad tips goes, here are my 10 Essential Overseas Travel Tips that should always be top of your list – you might kick yourself for not remembering these.

Always pack as little as possible - Only take what you will really need, not what you think you might need. Keep in mind that suitcases can become very heavy – especially in the event that you may have to carry your own luggage around.

Take a change of clothing and sample size toiletries in your carry-on luggage
- Not only is it great to be able to get a shower and change of clothes during long haul short stops, but you never know when an airline may lose your luggage. Not having to immediately rush out and buy clothes will save you a little trouble while waiting for your bags to catch up with you.

Put your name and the telephone number of your destination on both the outside and the inside of your luggage
- Sounds a bit school-childish I know, but if your luggage does become misplaced the chances are that it can catch up to you again more quickly.

Make sure you're protected against local illnesses - This is especially important if you're going away from the big cities and into rural areas – in which case travel abroad vaccinations become essential. Drink only bottled water and remember to use it even when brushing your teeth. Eat only cooked food and avoid leftovers. Try to avoid areas where mosquitoes will be very active. (Immunisation guides can be found on your Government Overseas Travel Advisory websites)

If you take prescription medicines, bring more than you expect to use and include a repeat prescription, just in case. If possible, try to establish if your prescribed medication is known under a different name in the country to which you are travelling. If you wear glasses, take an extra pair as back up - finding an opticians for replacements might prove difficult.

Be aware of other country's customs and laws
. You don't want to be put in the embarrassing situation of upsetting the locals or causing an international incident!! For example, you don't want to be caught spitting out your chewing gum in Singapore: it's a criminal offense. (To be sure, check your Government Overseas Travel Advisory websites)

Keep photocopies of your passport data page separate from your money and travellers checks - Even if you lose your money and ID, you can still prove your identity to the authorities. It's also a good idea to take along copies of your travellers checks serial numbers and credit card numbers so you can quickly alert the authorities in the event of the real items being lost or stolen.

Be sure to leave an itinerary with friends or relatives - It's always good for someone to know where you are and be able to contact you in the event of an emergency back home. If on a long vacation with no set itinerary, try to send an occasional e-mail or make a quick call to advise of your location, movements and forthcoming travel intentions.

Arrange to be met at the airport.- In this way you are not left at the mercy of potentially dodgy and unknown locals always on the look out to make a little extra money from the unwary or unprepared tourist. Study maps before you go and gain a little familiarity with the area you are going to be in - you'll have a rough idea then of where you are at any given time.

And finally…

Relax - Go with the flow - This will prove much easier if you've implemented the tips above and taken the time to plan your trip carefully. Remember that time invested in planning your trip beforehand results in a more relaxing time when you get there - which is the very reason you went on the trip in the first place, isn't it?
